Rome to Pompeii

Yes, the whole key is to get the early train out of Rome at 7:30. Just follow Rick's book on how to accomplish this task. Not the easiest day, but doable.

It is doable but makes for a long day and night. Make it easy on yourself and either save it for the next trip or do an overnight.

We stayed in Sorrento and spent a full day at Pompeii - it was not enough time.

Have you looked into Herculaneum - a lot easier to see and walking distance fr the train stn...hubby and I found it interesting...and not crowded at all when we were there (but is was mid_sept on a Sunday)...we didn't do Pompeii because of time, but even with us not being early-risers, getting off at the wrong stop and having to wait an hour for the train to get back to the correct one, stopping at a restaurant on the way back from Herculaneum for pizza - we still had time to go up top of Mt Vesuvius - which was not planned - they were selling tix outside the train stn for a van ride up...and we still got back to Rome for a late supper!
