Rome to Pompei in September

What is the easiest way to get from Rome to Pompei? I've heard mixed answers as to whether even to make it a day trip. Some make it sound exhausting. We are only going to be in Rome 5 nights so also, is that too short of time to spend an entire day going. It's more of my son's (22yo) desire to go. It seems maybe in early September it may be quite hot. If we do go...how long should we spend there before returning? Thanks

It can be done as a day trip, but it's definitely a long day. My husband and I are going to give it a try this September- we are taking the high speed train to Naples, than the Regional train to the Pompeii ruins.

It's very tiring to walk the ruins all day but it's easy to do as a day trip. You will get back to Rome very tired after a long day of sight seeing but you'll be tired if you spend the day IN Rome sight seeing. I've done this trip many times and it's worth the time and effort. Take an early train, we try for the 7-7:30 trains, and plan to stay most of the day. Try to get a train coming back around 6-7:30. This will give you a good amount of time to visit the ruins and really explore. You can hire a guide on site if you wish to help you explore or you can get a map and do it on your own. If your son really wishes to see it then you should do it. Donna
