Rome to Pienza: rent car in Rome and drive or take the train to chiusi, rent car and drive

Hello,

We will be traveling from Rome to Tuscany to celebrate Christmas. We will be leaving Rome December 21 and returning December 26th. Is it better to take the train to Chiusi and then rent a car? If we do this will the rental car agency be open on December 26th to return the car?

Our other option is to rent a car in Rome and drive. Can we get a car on the outskirts of Rome somewhere so we do not need to do the city driving? How do we get to the car rental location? Thanks!

I found it very easy to return our Europcar rental to the Tiburtino rail station area which is very near the autostrada headed toward Tuscany. Driving is easy once you clear Rome. I arranged my rental with Andy at www.gemut.com and had a very positive experience. We took a taxi from central Rome to the car rental location.
