Rome to Paestum

Hi there!

We will be going to Paestum from Rome on a mid-day Friday.
We know we can take a train, but I recall someone suggesting to someone that a bus would be a better option.

Does anyone out there know where we could look into this, and how long the journey would be vs. the train?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Nel

I have copied off a website the following info on travel between Paestum and Rome.

I don't know how old it is; so times may be changed. It appears to be a 4-hour train ride each way. I found no info on the bus.

"Leave Rome on an IC train at 0610; arrive Naples 0757. Take 0815 train to Paestum.

Leave Paestum 1433; arrive Naples 1612 and take the 1650 IC train back to Rome, arriving 1850.

I would buy all these tickets at Termini (Rome) so you waste time in Naples."

Hi Carl

Following your advice earlier - I found the way to go by train, but havn't come up with any "bus hits".

I would assume a bus trip would take longer than the train, so I conclude will will be better off with the train anyway.

Thank you so much for your help!

Cheers

I have had success in searching for busses by doing a google search for 'bus service Rome to Paestum'. It may work for you.

The train from Rome to Paestum would be the most convenient. You could take the train from Rome to Salerno and bus from Salerno to Paestum, but why would you do that when you could just take the train? Paestum's train station is under a 10-minute walk to the ruins.

Hi Giovanna,

If I may ask - would he bus from Salerno to Paestum be a scenic route?

If it is - then maybe we could take in a nice veiw on the bus - rather than the train?

Or - do you think it would it take too much time out of our day?

I appreciate your advice.
Thank you.

The bus from Salerno to Paestum would take about 70 minutes and leave from the waterfront. You would have to walk from Salerno’s train station to Piazza della Concordia on the waterfront, about a 5-minute walk. Schedules are limited on Sundays, so hopefully you won’t be traveling on a Sunday. Salerno is very industrial and the ride by bus is not particularly pretty.

The train would only take 30 minutes.

The bus stops right at the corner of the ruins in Paestum, so your drop-off would be closer than the train, but the train station is only a short walk.

Thank you so much!

I was imagining in my mind a pretty and scenic ride.

Now that you have corrected my thoughts, I will definitely choose the train.

nelly,

I had a brief look at the TrenItalia web site and they indicate (for example) a train departing Roma Termini at 06:45, arriving Salerno at 09:16 (EuroStar Italia, ESI 9371, reservations compulsory). The next connection departs Salerno at 09:44, arriving Paestum at 10:15 (R 2427, second class only). With a travel time of 3H30M each way, it's probably a good idea to leave Rome fairly early. I didn't check on the times for the return visit.

Another possibility (depending on your budget) would be to travel to Sorrento (train to Naples and then Circumvesuviana to Sorrento) and then use a private Driver to get to Paestum. As I recall, there are a few listed in Rick's Italy book.

Happy travels!

nelly,

I agree, those corporate Firewalls are a darn nuisance!

Hi Ken

Thank you for the effort - I really appreciate it as I am doing most of my research from my desk at work.
(I am a receptionist - and this is okay with my bosses!!) But allot of web-sites are blocked by the company so I can't get to the train web-site from here - so that does help me out allot!

I'm pleased that we can get a faster journey there.

We are staying over 2 nights in Paestum, and then on to Sorrento, so we don't need return travel. (From Paestum anyway! - but Sorrento to Rome is pretty straight forward.

Thanks again!
Happy travels to you too!!

The Trenitalia website shows only Eurostar/regional combinations when the querry is Rome to Paestum. You can save money without adding much time by taking an intercity train to Naples and then a regional train from Naples to Paestum. For example, taking the 06:27 IC Plus train from Rome to Naples would get you there at 08:36 with plenty of time to catch the 08:54 regional train that arrives in Paestum at 10:15. Savings is about 8 euro per ticket, double that if comparing with the high-speed Arista.

Frank,

Thanks for posting that. I should have been more thorough and checked more than one route.
