Rome to Orvieto train mystery

Wife and I are in Rome, scheduled to leave for Orvieto in a couple of days on a Trenitalia train.

We were just at Termini Station (from which our train leaves), and were surprised that Orvieto did not appear as a destination for any train. Our train is designated "Intercity 588." Does anyone know how we can find the right platform for this train?

I'm sure this question has appeared many times on this forum; I'm sorry to repeat it, but my iPad Mini oddly does not permit a search on the RS site.

If you're traveling on Saturday and departing at 10:30 AM, the train is going to Trieste and stopping at Orvieto along the way. The info boards in stations don't have room to list all the stops for trains that make many.

It appears that the train's first stop is at Orte, followed by Orvieto, but listen for the announcement, watch for signage in the station, and be aware of your acheduled arrival time, which I think is 11:43 AM.

acraven, thank you. We are scheduled to leave on Sunday rather than Sat. Do you know whether Trieste will still be the stated destination on Sunday?

The best way to look for your train is using the train #, in this case IC 588. There are also large paper schedules on the train platforms that list all the stops of that train. As mentioned above, Orte is the stop before Orvieto.
Orvieto is lovely!

Holly, thank you. Between your and acraven's advice, we now feel fairly confident of getting on the right train 🙂

The 10.30 has Orvieto as its destination. No chance for any confusion. You'll find your track number on the yellow departure schedules and on the electronic boards.
When arriving in Orvieto take the »funiculare« to get you to the city centre. The tickets can be bought in the small shop at the station.

If you want to know the exact path of your train, go to:

http://www.e656.net/orario/index.html?utm_source=e656_hp&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=page

and put the train number (in this case 588) in "cerca un treno per numero".

In this case we learn that the train has always Trieste as final destination, but on Dec. 17th, 2016, when it was truncated at Venezia Mestre. You even learn it should leave from platform 3 at Termini, but this may be changed.

On station electronic boards, the final destination is written in the largest possible font, while intermediate stops may be displayed or not. The train number is always an unambiguos identification. If you know the train number and departure time, you can look on the printed timetables and get the final destination.

I'm glad to yo hear that Italy is still displaying the yellow Partenze posters. I love those, but they seem to be disappearing in some other countries.

The same inexpensive ticket used for the finicular also lets you ride the bus to the Duomo area. Beats walking when carrying luggage.

Yes, it can be confusing! Last month I took the train from Termini to Orvieto, and Orvieto was not the final destination for the train, so Orvieto wasn't listed on the board. It also happened to be departing from a platform that was pretty far away and a little hard to find, so I asked for help. So glad that most of the locals are patient with my Italian :)

My wife and I made this exact trip in October. Its a wonderful excursion from Rome. Enjoy Orvieto - its immensely charming. And consider taking the tour of the caves. Very interesting - and well worth the couple of hours.

Here is an update, from Orvieto! The train's destination was indeed listed as Trieste, and it was easy to find on the big board using the train's number (588 in this case). Lachera even had the platform--number 3---correct.

What a beautiful place this is. The architecture is enchanting of course, but the whole surrounding countryside has a wonderful mix of buildings, fields, and woods. We have never really seen anything like it.

Joel--did you see all the cats by that overlook to the valley below? It's a few hundred feet to the right of the cathedral as you're facing it.

Jay, I think we were at the overlook you mention, sort of a little park, but we did notice any cats.

Edit, whoops, "did not notice any cats."
