Rome to Orvieto Car Rental Pick Up on a Saturday

During our upcoming first trip to Italy, my husband and I are planning to take a train from Rome to Orvieto on Saturday, Oct 3, to pick up a rental car from Hertz. Hertz closes at 1:30 pm on Saturdays according to their website. I cannot buy train tickets more than 7 days in advance because Trenitalia's schedule shows only regionale trains from Rome to Orvieto. Does anyone know whether there will be a long line taking more than an hour to pick up the car in Orvieto? My concern is how early should we depart from Rome in order to pick up the car before Hertz closes taking in consideration the train travel and wait time. We will drop off the car the following Saturday at Orvieto and take a train to Venice. Should I plan on more than an hour to drop off the car in planning the departure time for the train to Venice? I appreciate anyone's insight!

You have a lot of options. The train ride is about an hour, fifteen and there is a train leaving every hour, fifteen. So pick one that fits your schedule. For example there is a Regionale train at 8:58 - 10:15. Just buy a ticket and get on, no reservation required. Or there is an IC (Inter-city) at 10:30-11:45. That requires a reservation prior to boarding and would get you to Hertz around noon. Should be plenty of time.

Hi, Unless you are planning an outing in Roma that morning, I would catch an earlier train to Orvieto, giving you more time that day in Orvieto. Our unfortunate experience was very stressful due to a train derailment incoming to Termini that blocked the track and required us to take the Metro to Tibertina station and get another train that was enroute to Florence. We had pre-purchased tickets and were there early but didn't catch the announcement to move to Tibertina until it was too late. We were able to use our tickets but it made our arrival in Orvieto late. There was standing room only on the train due to the derailment and we didn't sit down until nearly at the station. We arrived at 1:00pm when the Hertz office closed at 1:00pm and one of our group ran to the office and caught the staff member as they were about to lock the door. There were other clients behind us and they kindly remained until everyone got their car. I realize that this doesn't happen often but in the future we will also build in a greater cushion to avoid mishaps like this. Have a great trip to Italy.

Why can't you pick your car in Rome?
The Hertz on 211 via Flaminia Nuova is easy enough to get out of town and that office is open on Saturday mornings.

Even from Hertz at Roma Termini it's easy to get out of town through the freeways. Look

Then you can return the car wherever you want. You can even drive to Venice if you want. It's all freeway.

Thank you for the advice. I think our plan to catch an early train from Rome to Orvieto will work for us. The reason we are not picking up the car in Rome is because of recommendations to pick up a rental car outside of Rome (avoid Rome traffic) when planning a week long visit touring Tuscany and Umbria. Picking up a car and returning to same Hertz location in Orvieto works out well since we will be staying in an agriturisimo lodging within a 45 minute drive. Our entire visit to Italy is: fly into Rome for 3 nights at a hotel near Santa Maria Maggiore; take a train to Orvieto for 7 nights at an agriturisimo in Tuscany and drive to small towns but will include Siena and Florence (hopefully we can include a drive to Assisi and Cortona) during the week; depart Orvieto by train to Venice for 3 nights before flying back to the US. I hope this plan lets us enjoy the sites without too much rushing from one to another but also does not exclude sites that we could make time for in 14 days in Italy.

If you are picking up the car in Orvieto, I think it is a good idea to get an early-ish train from Rome. When you get to the station you can ask someone there where the Hertz office is. It is about a 5-8 minute walk, depending on luggage, etc. When you pick up the car, ask them where to put it when you return it in case the 3 or 4 spots in front of the office are taken.
We only returned a car there and expected it to be easy, but as first-timers, it wasn't so easy. First of all, the Hertz office is in Orvieto Scalo, the lower town.. Google Maps shows it up on top of the hill in the Old Town. As we were winding our way up the hill, my husband kept insisting, and rightly so, that the train station would not possibly be on top of a hill--that's because I told him that everyone here said Hertz was right across from the station.. After nearly driving into a ZTL,we turned around ,went back downhill and drove past the small Hertz office. Of course, all the spots were full. We were trying to beat their 1:30 closing time and get a train to Rome. I jumped out to ask in the office where to put the car, and the office was full of people waiting. My husband drove around outside after being chased out of the gas station across the street. After declaring that I was not trying to cut any lines, just trying to find out where to put the car to return it, an employee followed me out and when my husband swung by, motioned my husband into the gas station he had been chased from. After a quick look at the car, he said we were ok to go. We asked didn't we need to go back to the office for a receipt, and he said no, we were fine. We were a bit skeptical, but didn't want to miss the train, so we took off. We received a receipt in the mail about a month later. It was all in Italian, but I called the number on it and got an English speaking agent who said all was well.
Lots of people seem to have done it with no problem, so hopefully things will go smoothly for you, also. Other than this, google maps worked well for us.

Roberto,
Great map. We plan to pick up a car from Hertz at the train station and drive to Sienna. Which route to Sienna would you suggest?
