Hi and thanks for all the recent help about Sorrento to everyone who commented. I have now come to think that since we really wanted to go to Orvieto on this journey, that we should go there directly from the end of our tour at Rome and then from Orvieto go to Sorrento and fly home from Naples as originally planned.
What amount of time in Orvieto would be advisable at least 4-5 days I would think. We don't have a car and will need to get there via public transportation from Rome. The from Orvieto to Sorrento. Would love to hear about staying in Orvieto and suggestions for hotels or other housing. Thanks Pam
How much time do you have for your whole itinerary? We stayed in Orvieto in 2011 for two nights and wished we had stayed three, but 4-5 would have been too much, esp. considering everything else Italy has to offer.
Well, we start up in Venice on August 31st and end in Rome on Sept 11 going to for 5 more nights to Sorrento if we don't change up any plans. I am glad to hear maybe 3 nights is enough. I think we may go up to Orvieto from Rome and then to Sorrento for the last 5 nights and may add a couple more nights on there as being near the ocean is always fun and rest up before our trip home. I am sure we could hire up a driver for a day trip around Sorrento also. Where did you stay in Orvieto? We are thinking of a convent type stay.
We stayed here and really enjoyed it: http://www.vacanzetrusche.it/
A couple of nights would be sufficient for Orvieto. We stayed in Villa Acquafredda, a nice, modern hotel at the foot of the hill (less than $100 @ Booking.com.) Orvieto has a bunch of decent accommodations both new and old. And don't forget to visit Civita di Bagnoregio, which is a short bus trip south or Orvieto, and an incredible sight to see.
FYI: Orvieto is about 70 minutes by regional train north of Rome Termini. Naples is about 150 miles south of Rome, or approx. 2 hours by fast train.
Pam, you mentioned convent lodging. The easiest way to find something in smaller locales is monasterystays.com. They include a small fee, but the service was good the one time I used them... in winter in a very remote area when I didn't want any surprises. I usually find convents/monasteries with internet searches, often via reviews on places like TripAdvisor or travel boards. If you find them yourself, you can make reservations using Google translate in composing the emails.
