I’m in Rome now and would like to do a short train trip to Orvieto and Assisi. Any advice about the duration and hotels? I’m thinking about Jan. 2 train to Orvieto, spending one night then train to Assisi and spending two nights then train back to Rome. Does this itinerary sound ok? Should I do two nights in each or switch the city order?

This past April I spent two nights in Orvieto and three nights in Assisi and that was perfect for me but I think one night in Orvieto and two in Assisi is fine.
In Orvieto I stayed in Hotel Duomo which I recommend and is next to the Duomo.
In Assisi I stayed in Hotel Sorella Luna which I recommend and is next to Saint Francis and very close to the bus stop from the train station.
