Rome to Ortisei via Train & Taxi

Hello!
Planning a trip to Italy at end of August for 2 weeks for my son's wedding! For background, going to Ortisei for 4 nights, then Verona for 2, Lucca for a day prior to arriving at the Villa Catureglio for the wedding weekend. On Monday we rent a car in Pisa and tour Tuscany for the next 5 days before driving back to Rome for the trip home.

My husband and I are flying JFK to FCO, arriving 8/31 at 7:30AM. Looking at trains from FCO to Bolzano and then onto Ortisei.

  1. How much time after landing do we need to allow to get through customs, get luggage, and get to the Leonardo Express?
  2. Is it best to book the train before we leave, or should we wait until after we land (so we know the best timing)? Can a ticket be changed if we book ahead and then need to push out the time due to delays or possibly move it up?
  3. I see one option that goes from FCO to Tiburtino via Regional train and then we change to a Frecce that goes to Bozano. Any advantages/disadvantages with Tiburtino vs. Termini station?
  4. Prefer a taxi/car service from Bolzano to our hotel in Ortisei. Are taxis readily available late afternoon or evening, or do we need to reserve ahead? Any recommendations?

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Have you bought the plane tickets? Flying to Rome would not be my first suggestion as it's pretty far from Urtijëi.

Yes, we have our plan tickets so can't change that. I investigated Milan , Venice, even Munich but since we will be in the Montepulciano area at the end, it made the most sense with the timing as well as economically to fly in and out of Rome.

The fastest train route from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Bolzano/Bozen takes 5:58 and goes to Rome’s Tiburtina train station for a 15-minute transfer to change to the Frecciarosa train going to Bolzano/Bozen . This routing is faster because it uses fast Regional trains to get directly from Fiumicino airport to Rome’s Tiburtina train station and does NOT go to Rome Termini which is where the Leonardo Express goes. On August 31, there is one of these super-fast routings with a 9:57 am train departing from Fiumicino arriving in Bolzano at 15:48. (3:48 pm) which should work well with your flight arriving at 7:30am. You can see your options at www.TheTrainline.com and buy tix either at that website or at Trenitalia’s site. (Or wait until you arrive at Fiumicino).
A taxi from Bolzano to Ortisei is going to be about €125. Bus #350 to Ortisei departs from just outside Bolzano’s train station at 28 minutes past each hour, so a taxi will be more convenient if you arrive in Bolzano at 3:48 pm.

Do not buy tickets until you arrive at Fiumicino and have your luggage. You do not know for sure if your plane will be delayed, or the time to get through immigration, or there is a luggage issue.

Rome2Rio thinks a taxi will be 100 to 130 EUR. On a bus, they store your luggage in the hold, then you take your seats and relax for about a tenth of that cost. But it is your money, spend as you like.

Taking the regional train to Tiburtina will save you 6 EUR per person, although it does not sound like money is an object. Take the best option when you buy tickets at the station.

…. or, as what happened to friends of mine when their flight began its final descent into Rome Fiumicino on May 7, 2015 and the pilot was informed that the airport terminal was on fire!
The airport did not clear planes for landing until 2pm that day.

Thanks everyone for your prompt and insightful replies! I was not aware of the TheTrainline or Rome2Rio so that will be helpful in planning.
