Hi, does anyone have any advice as to how to get to the old Pompei by train to see the ruins & to Pisa from Rome? We would like to take a couple of day trips while we are in Rome next week. Thank you so much for any help you can give in advance.
CJ, Rome to Pompeii -- hop on a train to Napoli Centrale. From there you have to take the Circumvesuviana (Line 1 - Napoli to Sorrento). Get off at the Pompeii Scavi stop. (http://www.vesuviana.it/Home)
Rome to Pisa -- looks like there's a no-change option -- the IC looks like it leaves every couple of hours (www.trenitalia.com)
Good luck!
Thanks Marco. Is the Circumvesuviana you spoke of a train also?
yes, its a commuter train of sorts. Kinda looks like a subway car. Very inexpensive -- if i remember correctly, it's like 3 euro or so... Check out Wikipedia's article about it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumvesuviana
very cheap, easy to use, can be full of pickpockets so wear your money belt.
When you arrive in Pisa, you can either waste time attempting to figure out the bus system, make a long walk of it, or just pay a few Euros for a taxi straight to the Field of Miracles.
Thanks guys I appreciate the info.
the bus system in Pisa isn't all that complicated. You walk out of the station and go across the street. The Red LAM bus takes you to the tower. When you're done, pick up the same Red LAM bus (on the OTHER side of the street) and it takes you back to the station. If you're not sure, ask the driver --- "per la torre?" and "per la stazione?"
check out the pisa bus system website so you know what to look for... http://www.cpt.pisa.it/orari/urbano.htm
yes, definitely do it before you arrive!
Take the bus from the Pisa station to the Tower if it hasn't fallen down yet. It was leaning when we were there in October. In any case, walk back to the station. We did. It is a nice, enjoyable walk and we found the best gelato on our trip at some place I'll never find again.
Most train runs from Rome to Pisa will require a train change in Florence. Or, about every 2 hours, beginning at 9:46am, you can catch a run with no train changes that heads out to the west coast of Italy and proceeds north to Pisa. Either way, it's a 3hr. 15min journey.
