How to get to Naples...train or plane? I am taking my mum home to Rome then to Capri. We last travelled there in 1997 and I am sure things have changed in the last 21 years! Any I travel advice about the best way for travelers who need help with luggage and have difficulty walking to get to the high speed ferry.
Thank you!!!
How to get to Naples...train or plane?
If you will have been touring in a Rome and then are traveling on to Naples, the train is the easier option, rather than the airport hassle. IF you are planning to go directly to Naples, book your flight to Naples as your destination from home. This eliminates the hazards of having separately booked flights..
I never really looked but I do not recall seeing porters at the train stations moving baggage. It seemed it was strictly DIY.
Pack light is the best idea I have.
Going to Capri is still on the 'to do ' list so cannot offer info on that.
Take the train from Rome to Naples. Trenitalia does offer porter service in Rome but not in naples. See luggage transport for FR passengers.

To reach the port.
Taking the ferry from Naples to Capri
You can reach Capri from Naples by ferry (the trip takes about 80 minutes and ticket prices are about EUR 12) or high speed ferry/hydrofoil) (the trip takes about 50 minutes and tickets are about EUR 18).
From Naples, go to the Molo Beverello pier to catch one of the frequent hydrofoils, or to the smaller Calata di Massa pier for more infrequent ferries. The best option by far is Molo Beverello, as many more ferries run from there.
To check schedules, visit Capri.net or enquire at the hotel.
Getting to the port in Naples from the airport or train station by taxi
We suggest taking a taxi from the airport or the Stazione centrale/Piazza Garibaldi train station to the port. To avoid hassles, be sure to take only the licensed taxis at the taxi stand, and avoid offers of rides from unauthorized drivers outside the taxi stands. Fares are calculated by the meter, which every licensed taxi has and must use.
We suggest requesting the fixed fare of about EUR 20 Euro from the airport to the port (about 30 minutes) or about EUR 11 from the train station to the port (about 15 minutes). These fixed rates include any extra charges for holidays or luggage, and must be requested before beginning the ride.
Following up on Gerri's excellent advice, it sounds as if you'd been to Capri before so are aware that it's not a particularly easy place for the traveler with mobility challenges as so much of it is pedestrianized? Accessing many of the accommodations involve a bit of a walk from the piazzas, and I'd book those cautiously if an elevator is an additional necessity.
The marina where the ferries come in sits below the town of Capri so you should contact your hotel in advance for porter service of luggage from port to hotel (there's usually a fee) or arrange that at the docks. See "Once you've arrived on Capri" on this page:

Probably the easiest way for you to get up the hill into town (or to Anacapri) yourself would be by taxi: see same link above plus this additional link. Taxis can't directly access many of the hotels, however.
