Rome to Naples Train

Hi all.
Later this summer we will be flying into Rome and need to take a train to Naples. Can we book a train ticket that goes from FCO to Naples Centrale (realizing there might be a transfer) or will we need to first go into Roma Termini station and get our Naples train there?

Assuming we arrive in Rome at 7am, how much time should we give ourselves to get to our train departure location? In other words if we have to take the train from Termini station, how much time does it take to get there from FCO?

Thank you for your help.

The unknowns involve your plane being on time, which is always risky. Don't buy tickets in advance if the lost ticket price will upset you.
From the airport to Termini is almost an hour. Immigration / Passport Control is always an unknown. Also, do you have checked luggage to wait for?
I dont think anyone can give you an exact answer. Wishing you well and safe travels!

Just returned from the RS South Italy tour. We did your itinerary in reverse. We took the frecchiarossa train which got us to Rome in a little over an hour. We had to transfer at Termini to the Leonardo express which seems to run every 15 minutes and takes about 30 minutes to get to FCO. I used the Rome2Rio site to do the bookings. There are a multitude of offerings so your budget may be the deciding factor. Our transfer at Termini was 20 minutes and that was adequate amount of time, no rushing.

Don't worry about booking a ticket in advance since there is no guarantee that your flight will arrive on time.
Once you collect your luggage and past customs there is ticket counter and there are automated machines where you can buy your train ticket from the airport to Naples.

Since there are no direct trains from the airport to Naples you will transfer at Roma Termini station.
You can get an idea of the schedule on the Trenitalia website, though the schedule for later this summer may not be posted yet

There used to be 1 or 2 trains after 1pm that were direct. If you are arriving at 7 am, I think your best option is to take the Leonardo Express to Termini and transferring to a Florence train. Depending on your pain tolerance, buying a ticket early for the Rome to Florence leg can save money but if you miss the train, you’ll have to buy another ticket.

While Rome2rio is fine to check transportation alternatives, it is not a great choice for making reservations. Use the website of the provider; in this case, Trenitalia.

If you compare the price of a ticket from FCO to Naples (which would require a change of trains at Termini), for tomorrow and again for 2 months from now, the difference is not that much. I agree with Pat, that the prudent move might be to either have the Trenitalia app downloaded on your phone and book the tickets when you clear Passport Control, or just buy the tickets at the FCO train station. That way you don't risk missing your booked train, or sitting around for hours waiting.

We did exactly this last April. We did not buy a ticket in advance. We actually ended up buying a ticket from FCO to Termini, then when we got to the Termini station we booked our Naples ticket. We could have bought it all at FCO, but be wanted a little time at FCO to collect ourselves, have a snack, not rush, and it did not seem cheaper to do at FCO. If you want to compare prices, I have that we paid 14 each from FCO to Termini, and then 47 euros from Rome to Naples.
