Rome to Naples to Pompeii to Sorrento

We plan to high speed train from Rome to Naples, with eventual destination in Sorrento. We plan to stop in Pompeii on the way for a tour of ruins. Can I just book a ticket to Sorrento and get off the train at Pompeii for the tour, then reboard for Sorrento......or will I need to buy a ticket to Pompeii, take the tour, and then buy another ticket on to Sorrento?? Many thanks for advice!

With a single Campania Express ticket you can re-board a later train, but it seems an useless source of stress to me. Just make two purchases and get two tickets, either online (Campania Express) or at the counter in Naples station (Circumvesuviana). What's the point of visiting Pompeii worrying about the time left on your train ticket?

When you arrive at Napoli Centrale, buy a ticket from Napoli to Pompei. Then when you are done with the tour in Pompeii, buy a ticket at the Pompeii station for Sorrento. The ticket is valid for 3 or 4 hours, don’t remember exactly, so if you buy one ticket only then you can’t stay in Pompeii too long. It’s only a handful of euro, so you wouldn’t save much more than a euro or two.
