I plan to take two 15 yr. old grandsons from Rome to Pompeii, before we join our tour group. We only have Sunday, June 20. When I go to trenitalia.it, I keep getting "no solution" for trains from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale for that date. Do you think tickets could ALL be sold out, or what? Thanks for your help. Benita
This may be an issue involving new train schedules in the offing. The new European schedules are to go into effect on June 13th, and Trenitalia is notoriously slow in getting their new schedules into the system. Prior to June 13th, I find literally dozens of trains from Rome to Naples each day...and while the times may change slightly, you can plan from the pre-June 13th schedules with pretty fair confidence they'll be very close to what will be shown when Trenitalia finally posts its new list.
The schedule past June 12 is not out yet which is why you are only seeing one train. You can enter a date before then to get an idea of the schedule, it won't change much. There are at least 4 trains an hour from Rome to Naples. You won't be able to buy your tickets through the trenitalia site but that's not a problem as you can easily buy them in Rome. They don't sell out and with so many trains an hour you can easily pick the one you want. I would suggest going first thing in the morning.

Thank you for your help, Norm and Donna. I feel relieved after reading your replies that it is probably a simple matter of waiting for the new summer schedule. I'll keep rechecking the trenitalia website.
One more factor to be aware of is that Trenitalia trains to Pompei do not stop at Pompei Scavi which is the station closest to the ruins. To get there you need to take a Circumvesuviana commuter train. Those trains depart from the lower level of Napoli Centrale. See the timetables here.
I was aware of the need to change trains in Naples, but thank you for your concern.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I'll be in Venice, then Florence, then Rome. Should I purchase all my train tickets in Venice when I arrive or try to purchase before I leave the USA?
John....Unfortunately, American credit cards don't generally work on the Italian rail website, Trenitalia, although you can purchase them for a higher price from RailEurope or other agencies. However, because you're on high-traffic routes, you should be OK to purchase when you arrive in Venice.
John, yes, you can buy all your tickets at the same time when you get to Venice. If some of your trips are more than 7 days out you will qualify for the 15% discount if the discounted seats are still available. You will be able to use your credit card at the station, just not on the trenitalia site.
