Is the Rome train station hard to navigate and read the boards etc? Milan was terrible. Any advice ?
I think it is easy. You just have to know the end station of your train and/ or the train number. What was the problem in Milan?
Signs and boards are exactly the same in all stations, most monitors are bilingual in both stations.
The big black boards headed "Partenze/Departures" always say first the train company, then the train type, the train code, the final destination, etc. etc. The last column on the right says the departure track (binario or bin) for each train.
At Termini the tracks area and the main entrance face each other and are on the same level, whereas at Milano Centrale you must go upstairs. The shopping mall is always between you and the trains.
If you couldn't find the tracks in Milan because it was "terrible", I hope you are not taking the Leonardo Express at Termini, it uses the mysterious tracks #23 and #24. https://www.romatermini.com/en/map/#
Never been to Milan, but Rome Termini seemed quite easy. All the tracks end in the same spot, so just find your track on the board and go. Maybe it's because I am used to New York Penn, and Grand Central, but Rome was pretty simple, and I was expecting the worst. Google map it, and you can see it is very straight forward.
I thought it was easy. I haven't been to Milan's train station, though. Did the problem have to do with the track not being posted until very late (only a few minutes before the train arrives?) If so, that causes trouble for a lot of Americans at first but it's normal. Don't expect a track number posted until 10 minutes early and don't be surprised if it's significantly less.
Some (most?) Naples bound trains are labeled Salerno, as many trains end there - Naples is a stop along the way.
I guess our issue was Varenna was not the end destination so the machines didn’t have it in the listings. We tried two machines and then just went to the ticket desk and got it figured out. From there getting the right line was a bit hectic as it wasn’t posted and finally the sign showed it. We have only travelled by train a couple times so aren’t seasoned. Also it was late and we had our bags lost from airline and our driver didn’t show up at the airport. Had a bad start to say the least but made it and are on a great trip now....hope Rome does go well 😀
Rome Termini is easy, easier than the crush at NY Penn! Rome reminded me of Washington DC station, and the signs are easy and logical to read.
I found Naples Centrale to Garibaldi a pain, because of the walk, ticket-buying annoyance of getting our Campagnia tickets for Sorrento, and odd people (probable scammers-harassers). But, it wouldn't stop me from returning, it would just make me need to be even more vigilant/street-smart next time.
