RS includes a day trip Rome to Naples in his Italy book. (and the Rome book)

Why not spend the night instead of a day trip? There is plenty to do in Naples itself (aside from Pompeii). If you go for the day, then be realistic about what you can see and head out the door as early as you can.

It would be a long day as a "day trip" from Rome, but is doable.

Have you been to Sorrento/Pompei/the Amalfi Coast before? Naples works well as part of that (maybe on a future trip).

If your trip just consists of a week in Rome, I'd peel off a couple days and do Naples, but not as a day trip.

If you book several months in advance, there are nonrefundable Super Economy fares available for 67.80 EUR for 2 round trip. That is with Trenitalia. Check Italo and see if they have any better deals. It is a 70 minute nonstop trip from Termini, leave at 7 am and return at 6:30 pm. That will give you 10 hours in Naples.

Sure you can do it: it's just a little over an hour by fast train, and direct/no changes. It's Amalfi Coast and/or Naples/Pompeii in a day from Rome that I usually try to discourage, especially if it's a bus tour. You didn't mention what month you're going but if it's during high season (later spring/summer/early fall) you should have plenty of daylight.

thanks for your input

We have been to the surrounding areas a few times-so our concentration is seeing naples where my family left for america years ago.
I hear the harbor is lovely and of course the museum. We are in rome right after Christmas this year for a week-going with our "kids" who have not been to Italy.

any suggestions on the restaurants in naples?

thanks again

annette,

As the others have said, a day trip is easily possible via high speed train. You may want to have a look at the RS Italy guidebook to get sightseeing and local transportation suggestions, so that you don't waste any time. There are also recommendations for good restaurants in the book.

Buon Viaggio!
