Rome to Naples....

Hi,
We arrive in Rome this Saturday morning and our RS tour begins on Sunday at 3pm. Would it be worth it for us to take a train from the Rome airport to Naples and stay in Naples for the night, then return to Rome for our 3pm tour start? thoughts?

Naples is only 70 min away from Rome via high speed train. It's up to you but you might be tired and jet lagged after a long flight. Not sure if you can see much in Naples the day you arrive.

Yeah...you're likely right about the jet lag. We will try to stay awake till evening, but adding a train ride after a long flight does sound like a bit much. Thanks for knocking some sense into my head :)

You could expect to be in Naples for approx 24 hours (1pm to 1pm). If it is somewhere that appeals and you have the will to make the journey, then why not? Have a great trip.

No ! What you need to be doing is adjusting to jet lag. And a train ride is a poor way to do that. Spend your time getting oriented to Rome. See the things that the tour does not cover. Do a walk tour and stay in the sun and active. We find it very helpful to take a nap in mid-afternoon. Set an alarm so you don't sleep more than two hours.

I love Naples but that is definitely not the city to use as your Italian ice-breaker. It's very intense and takes some time to appreciate. You need to have your wits about you to truly enjoy it. Some people have very negative reactions to it, that's why I say you have to let it sink in...it's not a good short stint, it's a place to linger a bit and let it grow on you. Better to visit when you're well rested and psychologically open to some chaos and grit.

I'm thinking you haven't visited Rome in the past. I would do or see something Not on the RS tour while in Rome.

Enjoy

I love Napoli too, but Agnes is right: stay in Roma and venture out on your own, especially for things your tour won't cover, but nothing major that first day.
