Rome to Monticchiello to Florence Help

Hey all. First time poster, long time reader. I appreciate the passion and respect on this forum. It's great! Anyways, as part of our 25th wedding anniversary plans, we are staying in the small hill town of Monticchiello for 10 nights in October. We'll be coming from Rome then ending our trip after with a week in Florence. We wanted to rent a car for our 10 days in Monticchiello and wondered the best place to do that?

We thought about renting a car in Rome, then driving to Monticchiello but the problem is we're heading to Florence after Monticchiello and don't need a car in Florence. Could we drop the car in Florence or do we have to return it to Rome?

If we can't drop the car in Florence, we'd likely need to take a train to a town close to Monticchiello then rent a car there for the 10 days. Ideally it would be the same town we'd be training to Florence from after so we could drop it off.

Would love your advice on the most efficient way to do all this.

Thank you!

John

Welcome to the forum!

Rent car in Rome
Drop it in Chiusi or Siena
Or Florence

You can always drop off at different location
Might be a small drop off fee

Check AutoEurope.com for your options

Happy Anniversary!

Brilliant! Thanks Christine. Was hoping we could rent and drop off in different cities. Will make things way easier. Thank you!

I'm guessing driving in Rome and Florence isn't the best? haha. For rental purposes, would you recommend renting the car from a place on the outskirts of both cities? Is there an easy way to find these places?

Chiusi is an easy pick up and drop off point. Used it when I visited friends in Celle Su Rigo. From there boarded a train to Florence.

Great! Sounds like the easiest option is to train from Rome to Chiusi. Rent a car in Chiusi. Then drop off and train from Chiusi to Florence. Bam! Thanks :)

Check opening hours in Chiusi
Closed mid day, closed on Sunday, closes 12-1 on Saturday

You could pick up at FCO
You will likely have more availability/options at airport especially if you need an automatic

Dropping at Chiusi should be easy enough, it’s close to Montecchiello

Last question. How does the car insurance work? Is this an extra you recommend purchasing? Or is it covered.

Go to www.AutoEurope.com
Choose no deductible coverage.
I would pick up in Rome and return in Florence. Drop off fees may apply but they are not excessive.
Pick up at the Roma Termini train station if you need an automatic, they will certainly have automatics there. No need to go all the way to the airport, which is far and has higher rental fees due to airport taxes.
If you rent in Chiusi, be aware that they may not have automatic cars, as the offices are small there. Also they are closed Sat afternoon and Sunday all day. Other than that it would be perfect if you want to minimize driving. Chiusi is along the Rome-Florence rail line (high speed trains do not stop there so you will need a Regional train).
Research about traffic rules and especially ZTL (restricted areas to traffic in historical centers of cities and towns).

Thank you Roberto. I can drive stick so I have flexibility that way. Rick says in one of his articles that he usually gets the smallest (mini) car. I'm 6ft2 but that should be fine? It's just me and my wife. I was planning to rent from Termini Station (I'm guessing Google Maps will get me out of Rome quickly - would you agree?) and then return the car to Chiusi where we can take the train to Florence.

If you can drive a stick, just take the train to Chiusi and rent there. I wouldn't want to be driving a rental car in Rome. Just make sure as someone said to check the hours for the car rental place in Chiusi and take them into account for your planning.
