We want to drive from Rome to Montepulciano. Our company is Avis, which has offices in various spots in Rome and at Fiumicino,of course. To take the train to the airport and then drive from there seems out of the way and time consuming. Has anyone driven from the city up north, how bad is it to find your way to the autostrata? We drove out of Paris w/o a problem,is this so much worse?
I would suggest taking the train to Orvieto. Its about 1 hr from the train station in Rome. There are frequent trains.Orvieto has a number of rental agencies. It is also a nice town to stay overnight if you have the time.I would guess it would be much easier to train to Orvieto then to drive from the airport.
Last March, my Fiance and I drove from Montepulciano to Rome, it was very easy, we even drove into the Termini Station to drop off our car....which is avoided like the plague to most travelers! We had no troubles, our car rental was Avis also, just make sure to allow atleast 3 hours or more because we were charged an extra day for being only 15 min late (only because we couldn't find were to park). If you get lost there are many places to turn around and ask a tenet at gas stations and they will tell you what to do. Montelpulciano is so beautiful (were we got engadeged!) and so is Pienza (about 10 min away) If you need somewhere to stay we know of a great agriturismo!
