Rome to Milano

My daughter is flying out of Rome on Sunday, the 28th. I have decided to fly out of Milan on the 31st, as I found a cheap flight. Any suggestions on where to go in between?
I have been to Milan, don't really want to spend my time in the big city, other than possibly arriving the evening before. Thanks.

Do you have one of the infamous early morning departures out of Milan's Malpensa airport? When you need to be in the Milan airport area will be a big planning factor. If you figure you have basically 2 full days (29th and 30th), especially if you need to be in the Milan area by the end of the 30th, and you're starting in Rome, Florence, Bologna, and the Cinque Terre are in between and on the way from Rome to Milan. But you probably don't want to be in Florence on Monday (the 29th) because many of the Florence big sights are closed Mondays.

Jean, Some possibilities that come to mind are Orvieto, Siena, Cinque Terre or Varenna (Lago di Como). The first three are somewhat "on the way" to Milan, so transportation time would be minimal. Varenna is only an hour outside Milan, so it would be easy to get back there for your flight. Happy travels!

Thanks all. My flight is at 10:40, so I figure I will probably have to spend the night before in Milan. I have been to CT, but would go again. Is it still possible to get a room in CT w/o reservation? How long Rome to CT?
Am coming from Bologna earlier in the vacation, and have been to Florence.
