We will be visiting Italy end of May. We land in Rome right after our international arrival and are headed to Maiori for a week. 1) What is the best mode transportation from Rome to Maiori? 2) We are planning a day trip to Pompeii. Again, what is the best method of transportation from Maiori to Pompeii? 3) Is Capri worth the trip? I've read conflicting information. 4) Anything you can recommend as a local or someone that has frequently visited? Thank you very much for your help and we are very excited to discover. #notinkansasanymore
Hi -
"Best" will depend on your budget, preference of transport and time of arrival but just taking a stab at this...
To Mairori:
Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Termini, or regionale train to Roma Tiburtina. From either station, fast train to Salerno. Explore your options here:
http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
https://www.italotreno.it/en
Either train system is fine, just pick the one with a departure time which works with your arrival in Rome and involves the least amount of changes. One caution is not to purchase your tickets in advance in case your flight is late and you miss your train.
From Salerno you have a couple of options to Maiori.
1) Ferry from Salerno Concordia, Travelmar's dock:
https://www.travelmar.it/en/
They may cancel routes if the sea is too choppy.
3) Private driver.
It's possible that others reading your question might have additional suggestions. Personally? I don't think I'd want to stay in Maiori the night before a morning flight.
What is the best method of transportation from Maiori to Pompeii?
I'd say SITA bus or ferry from Maiori to Salerno, and train from there to Pompei. Use the bus and ferry links I provided above, and the Trenitalia link for train times. From the train station in Pompei town, use a map to walk to the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance to the scavi: it's about 1/2 a mile.

Is Capri worth the trip?
The "worth it" question is always subjective! :O)
Whether it would be worth it for you depends on if you would enjoy what the island has to offer. I will say that we probably wouldn't have liked it as much if we had day tripped Capri versus staying a couple of nights. The hours before the day trippers arrive and after they leave are quieter, and the town centers are less crowded. Still, if you are willing to explore further away from the tourist hubs, you can find breathing room. It's easy to tour Capri on your own: no escorted tours needed:
I am not trying to hijack the conversation but just add to it with some additional questions that may help you decide what is best ( I am planning similar trip in August from Amalfi).
Several people have mentioned stopping in Pompei along the way ( I think they have luggage storage).
Also, with luggage, is it going to be tough to get from train station in Salerno to the Dock for the ferry? Not sure what the logistics are.
Thanks in advance for letting me participate in this discussion:)

If memory serves, it's about 2-3 blocks, maybe a 15-20 minute walk tops. Doable. If you can get a cheap taxi, all the better.
Thank you for the information. We won't be leaving direct from Maiori back to USA. We will be visiting Rome for 3 days and then head out. We, too, thought Maiori would be too far away to leave direct. I'm leaning to train to Naples and a driver to Maiori. There are 4 of us with luggage. Does anyone have a reputable service they would recommend? Again, thank you!

Why a driver from Naples? Maiori is MUCH closer to Salerno so I'd take the train there from Rome and your driver from there as well.
