My husband, 9-year-old daughter and I will be in Italy in October. We will spend 3 days in Rome October 16-19, have one travel day October 19, then arrive in Lucca on October 20. We plan to rent a car. Where's the best place to stay in between?

You have plenty of options. Viamichelin estimates the trip takes 4 hours. So you should have time to pick somewhere along the way. Orvieto? Personally, with a car, I'd take a longer route around Siena and find an agriturismo somewhere between Siena and Florence.

I found it convenient to take the train north from rome and get off in orvieto and get car rental there. There are more than one agency in town, and a hertz right next to train station. Very convenient. And easy to get out of Orvieto compared to Rome.

Thank you, Doug. Excellent idea. We will be living the peaceful farm life for a week once we get to Lucca.
Any recommendations for Orvieto or Sienna in terms of hotel?
