Rome to Lucca by train and later to Cinque Terre

We will be staying in Lucca four nights after arriving by train from Rome in afternoon.
A couple of questions:
We will likely make train reservations about 30 days in advance, is this good?
I thought we would take Leonardo Express from FCO to Rome Termini Station late morning after 9:10 a.m. arrival from US and then on to Lucca, likely with change over in Florence. I see also we can book a train from FCO to Lucca with changes in Florence. Do those options utilize Leonardo Express as part of the reservation?

We plan to make a day trip or two to Cinque Terre, but do not plan to hike. We understand that we would take a train(s) from Lucca to Viareggio and through La Spezia to connect to trains running to all five cities.
Is there a daily pass we can buy for the trains to travel between the cities?
Can we see all five cities comfortably in a long day tip or should we plan two trips to Cinque Terre?
Is there another suggested place for us to visit along the coast?

Thank-you.

You would do better to buy a ticket to Lucca on a regular train (versus the high frequency and relatively expensive Leonardo Express). There are trains going north just about every hour.

I'm showing at train leaves FCO at 10:32 a.m. and goes into Rome Termini in 32 minutes. There you switch to a Florence express train that arrives in 1 hour and 10 minutes. In Florence, you connect to another train going to Lucca (10 stops and 1 hr. 20 minutes.)

I've never gone past Pisa, so I'll let someone else chime in.

Do as you prefer. You can't reserve a seat on the Leonardo Express and on the local trains (Florence-Lucca); you are not actually booking, but just paying Trenitalia in advance.

If you get a ticket for an high speed train (Rome-Florence) in advance and your flight is delayed for hours, you have wasted your money.

Do those options utilize Leonardo Express as part of the reservation?

Go on trenitalia.com, put Fiumicino Aeroporto as Departure station and, on the search results page, click the "change" links next to the price.

The Leonardo Express goes to Roma Termini and costs 14 Euro per person, the FL1 goes to Roma Tiburtina and costs 8 €.

Since your final destination is north of Rome, the site will show both options depending on the departure time picked from the drop-down menu.
