Rome to Lake Como

Does anyone travel to Lake Vomo from Rome before? Any recommendations of food? And any tips for the transportation.

High speed train to Milano Centrale, change to train to Lake Como, either the city of Como on the southwest end, or preferably to Varenna on Lake Como near the middle of the lake.

Varenna makes a great base.

Rick’s book has lots of dining suggestions, info on the ferries, things to do. Highly recommend!

I'd also recommend Varenna in the mid-lake area of Lago di Como. There are some nice hotels there, and it's a good home base to explore other towns in that part of the lake (ie: Menaggio, Bellagio). It's hard to offer food suggestions as everyone has their own preferences.

Travel from Rome is very easy. Use a high speed train from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale (travel time about 3H:15M, depending on which departure you choose), and then transfer to a Regionale for the final leg to Varenna-Esino (about 1H:03M). Check the Trenitalia website for all the details.

If you buy the tickets locally, you'll have to be sure to validate the Regionale ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel. Failure to do so may result in hefty fines! The tickets for the high speed train don't have to validated, but they do have compulsory seat reservations which are specific to train, date and departure time.

As a previous post mentioned, the RS Italy guidebook has lots of information on hotels,, restaurants, ferries, etc.
