Rome to Florence via train and want to stop in a town for lunch and a walk

We are traveling from Rome to Florence via train and want to stop in a town for lunch and a walk. Where should we go that is easily accessible on the train route? Ideally, would like to leave Rome in the morning and arrive to Florence by 18:00. Thank you!!

Easy one hour train to Orvieto will give you almost a full day to explore and eat

That's not really how train tickets work. The majority of freccias will be direct to Florence. You can't get off one train and back on another on the same ticket. And the trip is only an hour and a half. Even Regionales have a time limit on how long the interruption can be. You would need to book a ticket to your town. Then a later train from that town to Florence. But first, make sure there is luggage storage facilities wherever you are stopping. But be aware that regional trains are slower, with frequent stops, and take a lot longer. You could look at Arezzo or Orvieto.

Rome to Florence is only about 2 hours. Assuming you will have luggage I'd just go to Florence without a stop. You could do a day trip from either city, without luggage.

Personally, when traveling by train between cities I schedule my trip mid day and pick up food for a train picnic.
