Rome to Florence via Pienza

Hello,
I am planning on going from Rome to Florence, but stopping off in Pienza for the night to catch some friends. This looks pretty difficult without renting a car. Neiter of us drive stick, so a one day rental looks to be $200+. The travel time doesn't look to bad, but any suggestions?
Also, I havent done much research on Pienza, and the detour is kind of last minute. What are the must see sights for less than a 24 hour stay?
Cheers,
Jonathan

Not sure about transportation, but as far as I know there is no (direct) train connection between Rome and Pienza, renting a car would be the simplest solution.
As for the sights, the Duomo, Palazzo Piccolomini and the Pieve di Corsignano (where Pope Pius II & Pope Pius III were baptized) are the first that spring to mind.
Oh, and don't forget to try the famous Pecorino of Pienza! :)

Pienza is fairly small, you will be able to enjoy it in less than a day. I would take trains or buses rather than spend so much money on a car, especially is no automatic shift is ready when you get there.

Pienza is a charming hill town to poke around, but with no must-see sights. If you're going to expend that much effort (by train/bus) or money (by car), I would assume that it is to see the friends. Otherwise, you would choose a more accessible hill town like Orvieto, which has frequent, direct train service from both big cities.

Buses from Chiusi (served by train) to Pienza require a connection in Montepulciano, or maybe your friends could meet you at Montepulciano or Chiusi. Don't expect any bus service on Sundays. http://www.busfox.com/timetable/
