We are arriving in Rome (FCO) and need to get to Florence that day - are we better to take trains - or to get a rental car at the airport - we do not need the rental car once in Florence - there are 4 of us travelling . we will be in Florence for 3 nights then need a rental car to go to a villa in Umbria. Thank you
I will take the train especially since you don't need the car in Florence. That way you don't have to worry about staying awake.
Take the train! It will be much easier and quicker than a rental car. At the airport you can catch the "Leonardo express" which will take you Termini. At Termini, you can pick up the train to Florence. I am sure there is a train leaving every hour.
A quick peek at trenitalia.com showed me that fast trains taking 1.5 hours leave from Roma termini to Firenze S.M. Novella about every 10-20 minutes. It's going to be the quickest and easiest way for you to get where you are going.
I am doing the same thing. I will take train to Termini from airport and then take the train up to Florence. I have done this before and then rented a car when we left Florence to visit other places.
Just buy the tickets at the train station upon arrival, so you don't have to worry about missing a specific departure.
