We are traveling Rome to Florence with Select Pass. I know we need to make a reservation for EuroItalia, but how far in advance? This would be Nov 17 and I'm wondering if you can just go to the train station mid-week early morning and get reservation before boarding, or do you need to make reservation online many days in advance?
November 17 is a Wednesday in low travel season. Wednesday is not a particularly "busy" travel day, especially during late autumn. High-speed trains between Rome and Florence run every 30-60 minutes throughout the day. The odds are very low that you would not get your first or second choice of train departure if you made your seat reservations as late as the morning of departure (or better, the day beforehand). I see no real need to book much sooner.
I'd do it the day before. Just don't wait until that day, more to avoid missing your prefered train due to long lines. It's possible that certain trains will fill up because it is a popular route with both tourists and business-people, but there are lots of options.
Someone once posted that there are 53 a day between Florence and Rome. Not all high speed but lots of options. But the IC is only about 30 minutes slower so you should have your choice of trains. You did not indicate if using first or second class. Seldom a problem with second class and never a problem with first.
Thanks everyone. I have a 1st Class Select Pass because our family is traveling to Switzerland and France also.
Your itinerary is so similar to the one my parents have- Saver pass- Switzerland, France and Italy, also they are going to Florence from Rome on the 19th(no reservation yet). I also heard there is a train strike on the 19th. They were planning to make a reservation the day before from Rome. Hope the strike does not affect the trains
