Rome to Florence train discounts with High School Students?

We are a party of 11 ( 3 adults & 8 high school students) after our escorted tour through Italy is over we have decided to stay an additional 5 days of which 4 will be spent in Florence. The students are in an advanced art class which is why Florence was chosen. I am having difficulty finding the fare (including seat reservation) for students 19 years old and under. Does one exist? Should I just be looking at a 2nd class ticket? Any help would be appreciated - we would like to give parents an idea of cost. Thank you!

Kurt, there truly is no discount for NON-EU citizens of that age UNLESS you buy a Carta Verde for €40. Frankly though, because you’re only making one trip it’s not worth the price. The discount is only 10%-20% on many lines and that will not cover the cost of going Firenze-Roma.

Since you’ll be in Firenze days before heading to Rome, I suggest you go over to the train station at least a day in advance and purchase an AMICA 2nd class ticket to Rome. On a Eurostar train, which takes about an hour and forty minutes to reach Rome, this will be your best discount. They must be bought the day before and AMICA class seats must be available. With AMICA you can save 20%. Not all trains qualify for AMICA class tickets (Regionale for example) and I’m sure you’ll see that on the TrenItalia site!

The one-way cost on Eurostar for an AMICA 2nd class ticket is €28.90. The same ticket purchase on Standard class is €36.10. You can also take slower trains.

The IC train takes about an hour longer and costs €21.60 for an AMICA 2nd class ticket… Or you can go even cheaper, add ANOTHER hour of travel (3:39 hours) and take a Regionale train – no AMICA tickets sold on this – and it costs is €15.80.

Personally we pay the €28.90 and go Eurostar. It’s a GREAT ride in 2nd class and you get dropped off in downtown Roma and/or downtown Firenze! Hope that info helps – for more specific times, go to the TrenItalia website at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html .
