Rome to Florence and Venice

My daughter and I will be meeting my son in Rome. I would like to then show them both Venice and Florence. I am assuming that it will be easiest to travel by train but I'm not sure if there a reason to go to one first over the other. Since I will be departing from Rome at the end of our trip my inclination is to go all the way up to Venice first then down to Florence and back to Rome. Any advice?

Jacqueline, Travel by Freccia (high speed) trains will be the best way to get from Rome to Venice and Florence. The travel times are: > Rome to Venice: 3H:40M > Venice to Florence: 2H:05M > Florence to Rome: ~1H:25M Note that you can also use the new Italo trains on those routes (I haven't checked recently), however in some cases they use different stations than Trenitalia (ie: Italo uses Tiburtina in Rome, rather than Termini). The Freccia trains have compulsory reservations. You can save significantly by pre-buying tickets, however that will "lock you into" a particular train and departure time. DON'T be caught without valid reservations for the train you're riding on (if they're compulsory), as you may be fined on the spot! Fines start at €50 PP and increase from there. The same fines apply for those riding Regionale trains (no reservation required), without validating their tickets in the track side machines. Happy travels!

Wouldn't it be easier to just get your son to take a train to Venice to meet you and your daughter? Then you could go together to Florence, and on down to Rome. If you have not made your travel arrangements, flying open jaw'd into Venice and out of Rome might work for you and your daughter--and save you substantial time.
