Hello, I am planning a Italy trip next May. Me and my buddy want to fly into Rome and move around without any pre booked train tickets. I see that Rome to Naples is about 22 euro down to 10.50 euro (dont care about slow trains). Is it around the same for Florence? In two weeks I would like to spend about 3 days in Florence 4-5 days in Rome and the rest in the Naples/Sorrento area. I know it would be better to fly into Florence and work my way down, but is it worth just going from Rome to Florence and back to Rome for a night then down to Naples?
Is it worth it is always a relative question depending on your values and interests. Florence is more expensive around 45E but check it yourself on the trenitalia web site. Nothing wrong with going to Florence and back to Rome and then to Naples. Distances are short enough and trains frequent enough that you could easily go from Florence to Naples in a day.
Would it be 45 Euro for the high speed? I am willing to take longer trains for less... I will be purchasing them at the trains stations.
If you want to save money, you should buy in advance instead of relying on lower speed trains (whose prices vary as well). With plenty of time available as you have, you can find those tickets for as low as € 9. Check also the new train operator in Italy, Italo Treno. They serve these city pairs as well.
Just go on trenitalia.com and check it for yourself. Good practice.
As pointed out, going without prebooked train tickets is not the cheapest way to do it. For example, a Regionale (low speed) train from Rome to Florence is 17 euros and takes 3.5 hrs. The Super Economy fare is 9 euros for the high speed train which takes only 1.5 hrs. But you have to buy the Super Economy fares in advance while they're available, and they're not refundable if you change your mind. So it's all a trade off.
Hi Bryan
First timer to Italy April 2012. We did what you are suggesting and it worked out fine. Went from Rome to Naples by Trenitalia. Then back to Rome and then to Florence. Have a great trip
Bryan, if you want the ultimate in flexibility and low fares and you don't mind the slower Regionale trains, you'll do just fine with just showing up at the station, buying your Regionale ticket, validating it in the little yellow box and getting on. No special fares or seat reservations on the Regionales. If no seats, you can stand just like the bus. From Naples to Sorrento, its the only way you can travel by train. No high-speeds on the Circumvesuviana lines that I know of.
Have you considered an open jaw flight? Flying into Naples and out of or Rome.
This might be a better use of your time and $$$
I have changed plans a little i think im going to save Florence for another trip. I am going to go from Rome to Naples then to Sorrento and along the Amalfi coast to Salerno and then take a train from there back to Rome. I have heard it is relativly direct instead of back tracking to Naples. Again I want to buy tickets the day before or day of travel at a kiosk. Does anyone have any idea of how much a 2nd class ticket on a slower regional train might cost that day? Thanks!
Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale will be 10.50E. Run takes about 2.5hrs. Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento will be about 4E. Travel time just over an hour. From Sorrento to Salerno, you will be on the SITA bus. Bus change in Amalfi. I don't know the fare but it's not too expensive. I can't see the fare for the run from Salerno to Napoli but it shouldn't be over 9E on the Regionale. There might be a train change along the way.
Thanks for that info, what about Salerno to Rome?
For Salerno to Rome, you are getting out of the range of the typical Regionale train. You would need to take a Regionale to Napoli and then another Regionale to Rome. Should be about 20E all together. No seat reservations permitted on the Regionale so you can just get off one train at Naples and get on the next Regionale to Rome. Just remember to validate your tickets in the little yellow box.
