Rome to Florence

We arrive in Rome at 7:45 am on a Sat. June 25th and need to get to Florence.

Should we take a train or fly??

We will unfortunately only be able to spend that Saturday and Sunday in Florence as we will be heading to Cinque Terre on Monday, then onto Verona on Wednesday and by Friday we will be in Milan and finally in Lago Maggiore.

I appreciate any suggestions, as I am putting this trip together very quickly.

We are meeting my brother in Milan for a business trip, so we are working our way up, eventually flying home from Milan.
Thanking all in adavance!

The train that takes you into Rome from the airport goes to the Roma Termini station. From there you can take the high speed train to Florence. I believe it was only about 1:20.

By all means take the train! Much more comfortable than flying.

You can look up options at www.trenitalia.com. If your plane is on time, you can take a direct train from FCO (Fiumicino Aeroporto on the website) to Firenze SMN at 11:08, no changes required, arriving 13:22.

Or you can take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini then catch a Frecciarossa to Firenze. For example, a 9:23 Leonardo Express followed by a 10:20 Frecciarossa arrives Firenze SMN at 11:51.

Note the direct train options come up for June 25 now, but the one requiring a change does not officially show as Trenitalia updates its schedule on June 8. However, schedules change very little and if you look at trains next week, for example, expect they will be about the same on June 25.

Take the train. You can buy a ticket from the airport all the way to Florence. Depending on the time you may get a direct one or one requiring a connection in downtown Rome Termini train station. There is one direct leaving at 11:08 June 25

Trains schedules in English are available on www.trenitalia.com/en.html

The departure station is Fiumicino Aeroporto, for Florence use Firenze SM Novella. I would select 9 as time of departure.

Don't buy train tickets in advance, they are wasted one hour after the departure of the booked train.

The direct bullet train to Florence departs at 11:08. If you arrive earlier at the airport station, get tickets at the counter: they will sell you a through ticket to Florence with a change either at Roma Termini or at Roma Tiburtina stations.

The airport trains will keep on departing to Rome every 20 minutes even after June 8. If you want to see the schedules of all Roma-Firenze trains, use June 25 as day of travel and fill the from field writing Roma Termini instead of Fiumicino Aeroporto.

How reliable (work stopaages etc) is train travel in Italy?

https://www.italiarail.com/strike-information

Strikes are a part of the reality of Italy’s railway system, but
luckily, Italians schedule strikes in advance, so travelers can plan
ahead.

How far in advnace are strikes scheduled?

Make sure you have your dates straight. June 25th 2019 falls on a Tuesday, not Saturday. So unless you are planning your trip for the year 2022, something is wrong with your dates.
I also recommend taking the train from the airport upon arrival. Don’t prepurchase tickets because you never know if the flight arrives on time.

Forget the strikes. They are rare in June. Strikes season is in the Fall, when labor contracts are negotiated.

The airport trains are guaranteed to run even during strikes.

Disruptions of high speed trains are extremely unusual; if it happened, you'd just buy an Italotreno's ticket instead of a Trenitalia's. The benefits of fierce competition and weak unions...

Otherwise you'd jump on the first Trenitalia guaranteed long distance train going north.

The system is quite reliable.

happy easter laura
i agree with other posters about taking the train, so much easier.
one thing i am confused about is your dates. June 25, 2019 is a tuesday not a saturday. are you staying elsewhere from tuesday till saturday before florence?

We just did this trip in reverse as we took the train from Florence to Termini to the airport. Very easy and relaxing.

Have fun in the Cinque Terre. That was the highlight of our trip.

So happy to hear that Cinque Terre was the highlight of your trip!!
Do you have any Verona hotel and or pensione recommendations?
Thank you so much....

Also, Princess, I am starting out in Florence on May 25th, I made an error on my initial posting.
Sorry to confuse you. Aloha.
