Rome to Fiumicino

Hi All,

Our trip is finally right around the corner and I've planned in advance as much as possible - one quick question about our departure out of Rome. On our last night we are staying at a hotel in Rome right around the corner from the Termini train station - we'll need to take the train from Termini to Fiumicino airport - do you sugguest purchasing tickets ahead of time? Or is this the type of train you can purchase same day?

You can purchase any time. I would purchase anytime convenient and at least the day before so you can just climb aboard the train. The ticket is an open ticket - no reserved seats - AND MOST CRITICAL - must be validated (time stamped) prior to boarding.

I don't know how many of you are traveling together, but the cost of a taxi is a flat 48€.
The cost of the train is 15€ per person (one way).
The time of travel is similar in the early morning hours when there is no traffic.

I'm saying this, in case there are 3 of you traveling and/or you are hauling a lot of luggage, which would make a taxi ride much more convenient, especially because the taxi would pick you up at the hotel's front door.

Roberto is correct, of course. The last couple of times we have gone to a shared shuttle arranged by the hotel. It was about 35 Euro for two. Little more than the train but save the hike to Termini. And one time shared the taxi with another hotel guest. We travel with a single carry on so luggage is never an issue for us.

andrea,

If there are two of you, the Leonardo Express will likely be a bit cheaper than a Taxi. The Trenitalia website indicates current fares are €14 PP.

My suggestion, based on the method I normally use - buy your tickets from a Kiosk the day prior to travel. That way you won't have to deal with any unexpected delays on the day of travel, such as queues at the Kiosks or whatever. When you arrive at the station on travel day with luggage, simply validate the tickets and then board the train.

Thanks so much for the info - this is helpful. It will just be my husband and I (with 2 small rolling bags) and since we are so close to the Termini I think we could make it there the day before to purchase tickets and then just hop on the train around 8 or so the next morning; our flight leaves at 11 - thank you!

Consider that if your flight is operated by an American based airline you will be checking in at Terminal 5.
The train station is in front of Terminal 3.
You will need to take the shuttle bus from T3 to T5. Do not attempt to walk that segment. There is no sidewalk.
