Rome to cruise port

Traveling to Rome in late September 2025.

We are flying in and think we will take the Leonardo Express from FCO to Roma Termini.
Is there a direct train from Roma Termini to the Civitavecchia cruise port?
If so, was thinking of staying close to Roma Termini for our stay (unless unrecommended area).
If an OK area for a base, any suggestions for hotel?

Thank you for any help.

It is basically a commuter run to Civit. There are three, four trains an hour taking between 45 min to hour fifteen depending on number of stops. Some trains have seat reservations. Others do not. It is easy to do. We have done it multi times.

We always stay in the Termini area. Our preference is Hotel Sonya across from Opera house because wife believes that the lattes are better the Aberdeen. But Aberdeen is equally good. All within a couple blocks of Termini. Excellent restaurants in the area and very handy to local transit.

There are many trains throughout the day from Termini to Civitavecchia. But the CIV port is a long walk from the station (1km) so if you have luggage you might need a taxi.

The Termini station has some seedy people loitering at night, but the area between the station and the Viminale Palace (Ministry of the Interior), near the Opera House, is good.

I often avoid cruise line transfers because they are usually expensive. There are a few exceptions. You may want to price out the cost of a cruise line provided transfer from Rome to the Cruise port vs. Train tickets and taxi. This might be a time when it is worth it depending on the amount of luggage you have with you.

The cruise line will be at least a hundred euro per person or more. The train fare will be 10 to 15 euro. It is not a bad walk -- flat and along the beach.

Train options are available and definitely the most budget friendly option.

To get from the train station to the port you can walk, take a taxi or use the special public transport line service that connects the Civitavecchia Train Station with the Cruise Ships and vice versa.

The service, which is exclusively for cruise passengers, operates from 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on ship departure/arrival days only. The shuttle takes approximately 15 minutes to arrive at the destination and it leaves approximately every 20/25 minutes depending on the traffic and passenger pick-up/drop-off operations.

The shuttles leave from the small square in front of the exit of the Civitavecchia railway station.
The fee is €6 each way per person. Tickets can be purchased directly on board.

You can find all the info here. https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/shuttles

Personally, I prefer to use private transportation to this particular cruise port. Certainly not the cheapest option, but I budget for the convenience of being dropped off at the port. For me, this is worth it and definitely less stressful.

I was unable to board the bus at the Civitavecchia station, because of the number of people wishing to use it. It's a long, hot walk even with rolling luggage. Are you going to the cruise terminal or the bus circle for smaller ships?
