There are a few options for getting to Civitavecchia, they are: 1. Train - if you can easily handle your luggage, a good cheap option. 2. Ship transport - usually more $$ than its worth.
3. Car service - we prefer this option, usually join up with others on our cruise through sites like cruisecritic.com and it is cheaper than the ship service and more than the train but less stressful.

It depends upon your luggage and whether you can handle it on trains. There are no porters in Italian stations. If you can, the train from Rome Termini station is the cheapest option. At Civitavecchia you'll have to walk or take a taxi to the port. You can also use a car service. Romecabs is safe and reliable but not cheap. An option is to go onto the Cruise Critic board for your cruise and try to coordinate with others to share transport to bring down the cost which is what we did.

We have made the trip four times using the train. It really pretty easy and cheap. The train takes 45 mins to 1 hr 15 depending on the train and costs from 8 to 12E - again depending on the train. Three to four trains an hour. It is a commuter run. Once at the station it is an easy, flat walk to the port entrance where a shuttle bus will take you to your ship. Generally you can see your ship from the train station. A car service will run in the range of 125 to 150E. It will be difficult for four people share a car if everyone has a lot of luggage. We only take two back pack style carryon bags plus one wheeled carryon size bag so our luggage is easy to handle. There is a shuttle bus for 1.10E to the port entrance from the train station. The line is long. Taxis are not eager for a half mile run and will charge more than an appropriate fee.
