We are spending 4 days in Rome-staying at the Marriott at the airport-then we need to go toCitivecchia-
one day before our cruise-any suggestions for the best way to get there. Sandra

You take the train from Rome to Civitavecchia. The train station is about a half mile from the port entrance. You can walk or take a taxi or a local bus to the port entrance. From the port entrance a shuttle will take you to your ship. You would have to take the train to Termini from the airport and then the train to Civit.. There are a couple of other train options but that is probably the easiest for you.

Why stay at the airport? Even with points it is not worth it. That is a very inconvenient location. It is about a 30-45 minute train ride into the Rome each day. You really should be staying in Rome. You can easily go to Civit... on the day of the cruise. It is about hour via train with three or four trains each hour. A fast train is 45 mins and a Regionale is about 1.15. Fare depends on the train but roughly between 8 and 15 euro.

Thanks for the info, I too am taking a cruise out of Civitavecchia but am staying near the Spanish steps for 2 nights then head to the cruise port. Do I have to go to the main train station to catch the train to the port? Once we get to the cruise port off the train what is the easiest way to get to the boat besides walking?
Thanks
Jackie

I agree with Frank, stay IN Rome. Even with their free shuttle, you'll waste a lot of time going back and forth. Their shuttle times will not necessarily meet your needs.

Thank you for these responses-yes staying with points as we can is great-the shuttle which goes to St.Peters Square-is another perk as we plan to do the Wednesday With the Pope!!! I will have to rethink
as the other Mariotts are very expensive-we have stayed in B&bs -We are 78 and 85 and train travel
is not our best way of travel now.As I said more rethingking. Sandra

We are also arriving FCO airport and heading to Civitavecchia a day before the beginning of our cruise. The train transfers and bus and shuttle bus seem troublesome with jet lag and age. Has anyone used a reasonable shuttle or car service from FCO to port? Taxi?
I've gotten quotes of 130-140 euros for two in a single vehicle.

Rome is famous for how far out of town is the Cruise Port. The quoted prices are quite reasonable for that long distance. We've been in a car service, and also have taken the train, which we found slow and tedious, especially if you miss the half-hourly bus from the rail station to the Cruise Port Bus Shuttle Station. However, the train is unbelievably cheap, and stops at several Rome stations. Note that not all car services and taxis are allowed onto the piers, so don't assume a black car will take you the boat-side.

If the older poster is going to use a car service anyway, I would also suggest switching to a downtown hotel. Being able to duck into an air-conditioned nap or bathroom visit on a SWELTERING Roman day is worth using up more Marriott points. Staying at the airport is false economy. BTW, when we were at the FCO Hilton a year ago, the sign said their shuttle was temporarily (road works in Rome) using a less convenient drop off location. Just saying ... ...

Trisha,
Yes, car services are expensive. But after a long flight, some jet lag, not being familiar with the area, there will be nothing better than having a private driver meet you inside the terminal and take you to your hotel in Citivecchia. No hassling with luggage, trains, buses and etc. We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a car service and not a cab company despite the name. Although we've not used them to go to the port, we've always used them from the airport to Rome itself and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. At one time you had to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey but not in advance. I think that has changed and it can be put on a credit card but I'm not positive. With regard to the high cost, it's really not that much compared to the overall cost of the trip. Hope this helps.

Used Romecabs on a number of occasions and the are great! I have done the train to Citivecchia and it is a tedious journey. Plus hauling luggage on and off trains is not particularly easy, especially at Citivecchia, as the train stops for only a couple of minutes and there was no sign of any help. Then there is the wait for the bus or taxi.....again no guarantee that there will be a taxi waiting at the station. Taxi finally came and did at least take us right to the boat, but sometimes you can’t do this and you have to check in at the main gate and then wait for shuttle to take you to the ship. Save wear and tear on yourselves and take RomeCab. The Company is highly recommended on this forum.

We have been happy using Blacklane car services in various countries, including from our Rome hotel to Civitavecchia port where 4 of us shared a ride. Sure, the car service is more expensive than using the train, but sometimes it's just not worth the hassle to save a few bucks. You can get the cost estimate for Blacklane online and book directly with them - no money required for the driver.
