Hi Ellen,
Your other post (which has multiple responses now) asks about transport to Civitavecchia from the "Rome airport" (Fiumicino?) not Termini. Which is it? And what is your idea of 'affordable'? Also size/weight/amount of luggage, or any mobility issues? How many in your party?

The underground stairs at the Civitavecchia train station are for platforms 2-4. Rome trains usually use platform 1. There are NO STAIRS for platform 1. The cruise lines won't tell you this to scare you into taking their extremely expensive transfer instead. Unless you have mobility problems, I'd take the train.

I have to add that I found the pulled-luggage route from the Civitavecchia rail station to the port's proprietary shuttle-bus station to be long, bumpy, and hot. Also, cryptic, even following Rick's book for a route. The half-hourly municipal bus was full when it left just as we walked in that direction. The only "gracious" option is a private car from Rome, which takes forever and (I don't have a current price) is probably 150 Euros. That could be cheaper than 2 X some cruise transfers. This is a real problem for cruises "from Rome."

It doesn't help the OP, but we solved half the problem by renting a car just steps from the port shuttle bus, to go to Tuscany as the next part of our trip. Stopped in Viterbo, had lunch in Orvieto, dinner in Sinalunga.
