Rome to Cinque Terre (Monorosso del Mare) and back by train

We will be traveling in May from Romae to Monterosso del Mare via train and then back to the airport. Wondering what trains to take to get there fastest, fewest transfers etc.

Look on trenitalia.com for the 3 hour direct train from Roma Termini to La Spezia where then you transfer to Monterosso.
That is the quickest.
Note you have to use the Italian spelling for all departure point and destination citie when searching trenitalia.com.

blocks,

I assume you're staying in Monterosso al Mare for a few days, and not intending to do this as a day trip?

The quickest way to get from Rome to Monterosso is to use one of the direct (no changes) trains from Roma Termini to La Spezia Centrale. Here's one suggestion, using an arbitrary date.....

  • Roma Termini to Monterosso, depart 09:57, arrive 14:38 (time 4H:41M, one change at La Spezia Centrale)

There are numerous other trains on that route, some of which go through Pisa and have two changes.

For your trip back to Rome for your flight, reverse the above route to Roma Termini, and then use the frequent Leonardo Express (two departures per hour as I recall) to FCO. Don't forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the Leonardo Express, or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot.

Just to add, I wouldn't recommend being in Monterosso on the day of a flight out of Rome, especially if that flight is in the morning or early afternoon. Transport snags are not unknown - we've had them - so it will be much safer to stay closer to the airport the night before your departure.
