My wife and I are adding a few days at the end of a RS tour, traveling from Rome to Matera, Basilicata, and exploring the area.Have had suggestions to rent a car and drive from Rome, but others on this site indicate rail is best until can get no closer by rail, then rent a car and drive. Any tips on how best to get to Matera from Rome , and good hotels in Matera area?
I think it's a toss-up. Compare the drive time (and your availability to make any stops if desired) with train plus car pickup (in Bari, there are rental offices a short walk from the train station outside the ztl, and it's about 45 minutes from there to Matera).
There is no shortage of lovely accommodation in Matera, but I loved Torretta ai Sassi so much I stayed there twice.
I can't comment on the drive to Matera, but I do know that there are a couple of direct Freccia trains per day that will get you to Bari in about 4 hours. I've taken the train and it's a comfortable way to travel. If you pre-purchase Super Economy tickets, the cost could be under 40 euro per person. I'm not sure if there are inexpensive flights to Bari, but that might be another option to explore if you decide not to drive.
I stayed at Hotel Sassi in Matera and really enjoyed my stay. It's not accessible by car, but I believe they have arrangements with a nearby parking garage.
We flew Rome to Bari on Alitalia which you could do, then rent a car.
