Rome to Bari

I’m looking for trains from Rome to Bari, and next Friday and Saturday there is an 8:05 high speed train that gets to Bari in less than 4 hours. After that weekend (1/8 and 1/9) that time never appears again, and I can’t find an early morning high speed train from Rome to Bari. I’m thinking of going in September...any chance the early morning high speed train will be back then?

lca,

There are two rail schedule updates per year, so I doubt you'll be able to find much information yet for September. I'd suggest waiting until a month or two before your travel dates to research the travel times.

If you're planning to go to Bari directly after arrival at FCO airport, flying may be faster. However, if you'll be going to Bari after a few days in Rome, using one of the high speed trains is probably your best bet. Even with a travel time of 4 - 6 hours, that will probably still be quicker than a flight, when all is considered.

Before Covid you had to wait up to mid-June to see the schedules of all trains running up to mid-December. Before Covid.

fast and inexpensive.

A 4 hours train trip would be faster, unless they are flying into FCO from somewhere else.

Rome to Bari by train - make sure you book in advance. Purely based on personal experience: although for most of the route, the train is relatively empty, the Rome to Caserta stretch can be very busy because passengers to Naples sometimes cannot get the direct fast train (booked) or sometimes find it cheaper to go to Caserta and catch a local train into Naples.

The train ICA99 asked about has only reserved seats, it's the Frecciargento #8303 to Lecce.

Rome2Rio is very helpful in indicating whether rail service and/or bus service is available, and it seems to be correct about where one might need to transfer. However, I have often found it (even pre-pandemic) wildly off-base as to fares, travel times and frequencies. If you use that website, it's really important to keep drilling down to find the name of the transportation company offering any service you think you might want to use, then go directly to its website for accurate schedule and fare information. Bus schedules in Italy can be highly day-of-week specific and additionally may differ for periods when schools are in and out of session, so pay attention to footnotes on schedules.
