Rome to Assissi

Our tour ends in Rome and we want to travel to Assissi before heading back to the States via Rome. Train or bus? Any must sees or must do's would be appreciated

Definitely travel by train on that route. It's very easy! There are a few direct (no changes) trains on that route with a travel time of about two hours, but most have one change and take slightly longer. If you don't mind an early start, there's a direct departure at 07:58, arriving Assisi at 10:07. As that's a Regionale train, DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel.

If you just plan to visit Assisi, then I second the suggestion of going by train. Tickets are only 10.95 euro each way whether direct or with a change. If you want to explore other towns near Assisi, then it would be worth considering a car rental. I had a car once during a stay in Assisi and was able to visit several interesting towns that would otherwise have been difficult to reach efficiently. My recollection is that Rick's Italy (not Best of Italy) guidebook had good coverage of Assisi. I enjoyed all the sights I visited, so pick the ones of interest to you and you can't go wrong. I thought the two most impressive sights in town were the Basilica of St. Francis and the views out over the countryside. The piazza in front of St. Clair (Santa Chiara) church has especially good views day and night,

E-tickets save time at machines and windows, are good for 4 hours from the selected time for any other train on the route and are not validated.

The station is adjacent to Santa Maria Degli Angeli, a beautiful church definitely worth a visit. The town is 3 miles away reached by the C Bus; ticket purchase from the shop in the station.
