Rome to Assisi Day Trip or overnight?

Husband and I are returning to Italy for the 3rd time for 15 days August 25 to September 10. Air tickets & all hotels booked and our itinerary so far is as follows: Day 1: Depart US, Arrive Rome Day 2 ROME: 3 nights (this will be our 3rd time in Rome)then head North(first time) to VENICE: 6 nights/with a day trip to Padua & visit Murano, Burano, Torcello VERONA: 3 nights (opera tickets for 1 night) MILAN: 3 nights with day trip to Bergamo; Fly back to US from Milan Now thinking of doing a day trip to Assisi from Rome but it looks like it's about a 2+ hour trip each way and it appears the "direct" trains make many (10) stops. We've were in Assisi 10 years ago but are thinking we'd like to return. Thinking we could do it as a day trip? Any recommendations?
OR: Cut 1 day from our time in Rome and do an overnight in Assisi then train direct to Venice from there. Any train travel tips for Rome to/from Assisi and/or on to Venice from Assisi would be most welcome. Grazie!!!

I would shave two nights off Venice and spend them in Assisi. It will be a nice contrast to all the other places you're visiting.

Thanks Michael...we thought of shaving one day off Venice and doing Asissi as an overnight ... but then we looked at the trains on Trenitalia from Assisi to Venice and they take about 5-6 hours with changes & a number of stops. Unless I'm reading the train schedules incorrectly? Such a wonderful dilemna!

It's about 5 hours total. To train from Assisi to Venice you would have to do Assisi to Florence on a Regionale Veloce (2.5 hrs, 11 stops) , then Florence to Venice on a Freccia train (2 hrs, 3 stops).

Would it be possible for you to go to Assisi from Rome and arrive in Venice a day or two later? It seems like a long train trip to Venice but I think the time in Assisi would be worth it.

I vote for an overnight in Assisi. The views are beautiful at sunset, the streets are magical after dark, and there is a peaceful glow to the whole environment. My favorite hangout would be in the piazza by Santa Chiara then stroll to the Piazza Commune for a glass of wine (have you tried a Garibaldi? - compari and orange juice) then a leisurely walk (take the upper road) to Basilica San Francesco and back for another Garibaldi in the Piazza Commune. That's my dream night in Assisi - and I do it every year.

I love Assisi. It is definitely worth an overnight but you should definitely cut the days off of Venice rather than Rome.
