Rome to Amalfi/Positano

Hi,

Does anyone have a recommendation for the best way to travel from Rome to and around Amalfi/Positano? I see I can take a train or rent a car, but I'm wondering if Amalfi would be better with a car to get from town to town? Also any recommendations on the best place to make our base camp/stay would be appreciated.

Best,
Allison

A rental car is the last thing you want if travelling the AC between April and October. Backed up traffic and a dearth of parking availability. Depending on where you will be staying, take a train to Naples or Salerno. Then by private car service (or ferry from Salerno). Location during your stay depends on what other places you want to visit. If only the AC towns, then Amalfi makes sense. But if you want to include days visiting Capri, Pompeii, and Naples, consider staying in Sorrento instead.

Travel between the AC towns can be attempted by bus, but be aware of possible long lines, SRO, or buses not stopping because they are already full. Otherwise, look at the ferries. Except Ravello, which can only be reached by bus or car.

I wouldn't rent a car. We didn't. Once you get to the Amalfi Coast, you can use the ferry system to get between Positano, Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri, etc. I would take a high speed train from Rome to Naples, then have a car service take you from Naples train station to your destination. Definitely set up in advance, ask your hotel if they have recommendations. In terms of your home base, we stayed in Positano but would love to make Amalfi or Ravello our home base next time. Have a wonderful trip! For dinner, don't miss Bruno and Ristorante Max in Positano if you're there around dinnertime :)
