Rome to Amalfi Drive the whole way, train only, or both what about naple

We are two women and we are taking a two night excursion to the Amalfi/Sorrento/Positano area from Rome in early April.
Should we rent a car from Rome? I think we need a car to really enjoy the scenery. should we go to naples at all? Which of the three towns above would be best for us.

thanks as always

Stay in Sorrento and take the train. To get there take the train to Naples and the circumvesuvinia train from Naples to Sorrento. Use the SITI bus to explore the coast. You really don't want to drive, let the bus driver do the work and you can just enjoy the ride. Spend a day checking out Amalfi and Positano. Then spend a day at Pompeii.

You do not want to drive anywhere along this route. There's lots of information on this site about trains, ferries and the SITA buses.

For two nights, I'd suggest basing in Sorrento.

It's rare to see a recommendation here to drive, when it involves driving in Rome or Naples, as you mention in your original post. Driving in those areas is way more trouble than it's worth.

Thank you all for the great info.
There is absolutely no question about what we
should do. I'm glad to see no one said 2-3 days
would not be enough time.

Happy travels to all,
Tina
