Rome Tiburtina train station to airport

What's the best way to get from the Tiburtina train station in Rome to the airport, and how long will it take in the early morning hours? We are considering taking a night train from Venice, arriving at 7:00 am - but need to be at the airport to catch a 9:50 am flight.

You can probably stay anywhere in town as your flight departs late in the morning. All transportation options are available at 06:30 when you need to be heading to the airport. Not sure how old your children are, but their ages may play a factor in which mode of transport is the least expensive. I'm sure there are many folks on this board who can better recommend inexpensive family accomodations for you. As I lived in Rome, I did not stay in too many hotels, but I've met folks at probably 400+ hotels so I know where many are. Most folks would suggest to stay near the Roma Termini train station as you could come in from Venice and then leave out the next day easily. From there you can take the Leonardo Express, the SITBus Shuttle, the Terravision Bus (after 07/15/2011), a larger taxi, or a private shuttle. (With 6 folks and luggage, the shuttle might be the way to go!). You could also stay near the Trastevere train station and catch the FM1 out to the airport. Again though, If you do use a shuttle you can basically stay ANYWHERE - Based on your limited time, Termini may be your best option. Good Luck on your trip.

Julie, if you have a 09:50 flight I'd not plan on an arriving in Rome as late as 07:00. That would be putting too much faith in Trenitalia! On top of that, you'd have to get on an FM1 train headed to the airport and it takes 45 minutes from Tiburtina on the regionale train. Best case scenerio... you catch the 07:18 train and make the FCO Train Station at 08:03. Then you'd have to run from there to your check-in counter. Worse, if you were headed back to the US on the 09:50 flight, you'd have to go to Terminal 5 at FCO... by shuttle bus. Unless you were quite lucky, you might wait for the shuttle bus for at least 10 minutes (probably more like 15-20 minutes). That puts you in T5 at about 08:20 for a flight that departs at 09:50. Not sure when your airline closes its check-in counters... but most are between 30-45 minutes before flights... and you STILL have to go through security and make your way to your gate. You really have about a 50 minute margin of error (if that!) to ride 2 different trains, a shuttle bus, check-in, clear security, and dash for the gate. Not the way I'd want to end my restful vacation in Italy... All that said, come back to Rome the previous day... and then you have your choice of multiple travel options - at your leisure - to the airport. In fact, if you're departing after July 15, you can ride the Terravision Bus Service from Roma Termini to FCO for only €6. They are re-starting their service at FCO and will offer the lowest price into the city or out to the airport! I think I'd reconsider.... Good Luck!

Ron, THANK YOU SO MUCH! Wow! Ok, since you seem to have the inside track :) ... we should obviously take the train from Venice to Rome the night before, so where would you recommend we look for a hotel to be able to get to the airport in a timely manner the next morning? We are traveling with our 4 children (so we definately do not want to be running through the airport in hopes of making it on time). So I'd like the least stressful way to get to the airport that morning. Assuming we arrive in Rome on Trenitalia from Venice... where should we go from there? Would like to stay someplace relatively safe and clean, but inexpensive - just need a place to sleep. Any input you have regarding the area of Rome we should try to find a place to stay in would be much appreciated! Thanks for being so helpful! THANK YOU again for your fabulous insight!!
