My husband and I are taking the "Heart of Italy" 9 day tour this Summer. The two days in Rome include: Ancient and Catholic Rome. We plan to fly into Rome a day early and need: 1. Hotel: close to sights and economical
2. Recommendations on sight seeing/Rome. Vatican City?
You can use venere.com for hotels. The most central areas are the pantheon and navona areas. As for sightseeing recommendations.....what are you interested in? With only a day I don't know how much you'll be able to fit in. I would suggest a good guide book and determine what you won't be seeing on your tours. Donna
Agree with www.venere.com to find a hotel to your liking. Easy to use and book. use it all the time for 2-3 nights at end of our bike tours in Italy. Not sure what you will see with the tour you are on, but if Ostia Antica is not included, that would be a nice one day adventure for you. Gets you out of the heart of the noise in the city into the country side. Bring a picnic lunch, or just eat at the cafe they have on the grounds. It' a simple Metro ride with one transfer to get there, you end up a block or two from the entrance. You could hire a guide for the tour, or just walk around and enjoy the site by yourself. Imagine yourself living there...I love that part! you might find some info on the web and bring it with you so you have some of the history.
Best recommendation is to buy the RS Rome 2011 book and read it. You'll be able to pick the sights that most interest you and find lodging that fits your definition of "economical". Happy travels.
