Rome Termini to Sorrento via Pompeii

I have a global Eurail pass and looking for the best route and train reservations to get from Rome to Sorrento Sunday Aug 3rd. We would like to visit Pompeii first and drop off our luggage and explore before heading to our hotel in Sorrento. Does anybody have a good itinerary for this? Thanks

Take the train from Rome to Naples. You catch the commuter train from there, which I don't believe is covered by your pass. Buy a ticket to Pompeii scavi and then on to Sorrento.

Yes, your railpass covers the base price of the Rome-Naples fast train (1 hour), and you pay a 10-euro seat reservation fee (can buy at any train station in Italy). At Napoli Centrale station, go to the lower level and buy a [Circumvesuviana](www.vesuviana.it) ticket to Pompei Scavi station (40 minutes, 2.90 euros, direction Sorrento). At Pompeii, you can deposit luggage for safekeeping either at the train station (3 euros) or free at the entrance to the archeological site. Buy a new ticket to continue on the same train line later to Sorrento (30 minutes). See good descriptions in the Naples and Pompeii chapters of Rick Steves' Italy book. There have been other recent forum postings about the baggage check options, which you may find through a search.

Ditto Donna, you take the nice Trenitalia train from Roma-Termini to Napoli Centrale or you can take the nice Italo train from Roma-Tiburtina to Napoli Centrale. At Napoli Centrale, you go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana train station and take the commuter train to the Pompei Scavi stop. There is a staffed left luggage facility at the entrance to the runs. When you are done, simply go back out and get on the same train to Sorrento. Just keep you eyes on your luggage on this commuter train. As for your Eurail pass, Trenitalia will charge you a supplemental fee of 10Euro to get you seat reservations. You can't just hop on the Freccia high-speeds without first securing and paying for your reservation. Neither Italo nor the Circumvesuviana train systems will accept your pass. The bus systems or ferry systems in the Sorrento area won't either.
