I will be traveling from Rome termini station on 9/30/12 to Assisi I am thinking of taking the train that has one connection.. I am forgetting where... But the connection is only about 8 min. Long? I am traveling with my mom so I am wondering if that connection time is long enough? Or do we even have to get off the train maybe people just get on??? Or should I opt for the direct train the only down side to that is that I believe it arrives after dark and I was hoping to arrive in day light...any help is really appreciated thanks
Direct trains from Termini depart at 07:43 and 17:35. A connection requires changing trains. You have lots of departure times with longer connections than 8 minutes. Leave Termini at 11:13 with a 28-minute connection at Terontola-Cortona. Leave Termini at 13:28 with a 52-minute connection at Foligno. Leave Termini at 15:05 with a 29-minute connection at Foligno. Leave Termini at 15:36 with a 13-minute connection at Terontola-Cortona. Leave Termini at 17:25 with a 13-minute connection at Foligno.
My experience with ITalian trains is that they will always be late. Our trains averaged being late anywhere from 10-45 minutes. This happened to us when we traveled from Assisi to Rome. We were late from Assisi, but it did not matter, as our connecting train was scheduled like an hour later. But what was late, was the train that we would not have made, even if we were on time. So we got on the train we were not meant to be on and arrived to Rome much earlier than we though we would. But where we had to change trains was small and if you have 8 minutes to spare, you may be ok, unless your mom has speed limitations. Just be ready to get off train before it stops and somewhat hustle to your next gate....most likely it will be late.
Thanks for the help I went ahead and booked the 15:05... So that whole work.. Just one more question does the Assisi station have a ticket machine? Or should I buy my ticket leaving Assisi in Rome?
There is no need to book for such a trip. You can buy tickets at the station. Reservations are not mandatory for the type of trains you'll be traveling in (Regionale Veloce or Intercity train). However I would also consider using a comfortable bus directly from Roma (Stazione Tiburtina) to Assisi. No need to negotiate train changes with luggage and stuff. The bus company for the Assisi-Rome is Sulga (at least that's the one I know, there might be more). Check it out:
