Rome-Termini Station- Safe Area??

I will be going to Rome this summer and I'm in the process of checking out hotels. There appears to be a few inexpensive hotels near the Termini Station but, I've been told that area is not very safe. Can anyone tell me if that is true?

We think it is fine especially on the south side of Termini towards the Vatican. We have stayed there four times and will be there again this fall. We prefer that area for local restaurants, little lower costs, and convenience to transportation. The area around Termini is a little seedy looking and, in the US, we associate seedy with high crime. But there are a lot of areas in Europe that are seedy looking but perfectly safe.

My husband and I stayed at The Beehive, two blocks from the Termini Station. We felt very safe. We were out walking until 11:00 pm at night. There is so much activity near the train station that you are not alone on the streets. We walked to all the sights from there.
The Beehive also has apartments they rent out. I can't remember the name but I'm sure the Beehive web page would have it listed.

We stayed within 2 blocks of Termini, and felt it was safe. Lots of folks out and about near and around the train and bus stations. Being so close to Termini is great, as taking the metro and buses are so convient. Many buses terminate at Termini, and we found buses much easier, versus the metro. Buses drop you closer to where you want to be.

Our Rick Steves tour stayed at the Hotel Selene, which was only a few blocks away, it felt safe enough around our hotel .. and I was alone with a 12 yr old daughter.

Hi Angelina,

I've stayed within a couple blocks of Termini both times I've been in Rome -- once with a girlfriend and once with my husband. Both times I felt completely safe. Just be smart about where you go and at what hour, as you would in any big city. There are lots of people out at all hours, which can either be comforting or unnerving. Remember that in Europe you're far more likely to be a victim of petty theft rather than violent crime, and petty theft can usually be prevented with preparation on your part.

That said, the hotels near Termini are a toss-up. There are some real dives, places where they just don't give a darn about their visitors. It was worth it to us to spend a little more and have a hotel with a street-level entrance (rather than a hotel that's on the fourth floor of a building), so we didn't have to walk through a strange building at night. If it's in your budget, go for a hotel that's a bit nicer than you would normally choose. (Remember that Rome in summer is hot and stressful -- you'll want a nice place to come "home" to!)

As a good budget option, Hotel Sileo is near the station and run by a very sweet family.

Have a good trip!

Summer, Rome, hot, being able to sleep = accommodation with AC. Unlike here, not all hotels automatically come with AC--especially if you're looking on the budget end of accommodations, you'll want to double check to make sure you're getting AC. You'll be glad you did, even if you have to pay more.

I stayed near the Termini - Hotel Lousiana (in Rick's book). Single woman traveling alone and I felt very safe. I walked around the area a lot at night to go to restaurants and to the metro station.
No problems for me...... other than the high hotel rates in Rome.

Angelina,

Can you provide an specific examples from the people that told you the area was "not very safe"?

I've stayed in the Termini area in the past and never had any problems or felt "threatened" walking in that area, even at night.

You indicated that you were "checking out Hotels". Have you selected one yet or would you consider Hostels as well?

You might have a look in either the Italy or Rome books, as there are lots of listings for Hotels in various price ranges. As with all of Rick's listings, they will be "clean, safe and affordable".

Happy travels!

The hotels in the Termini area generally are dives and the personnel surly. It is not particularly safe or picturesque. There are much better areas in which to stay, and the station is always a short taxi ride away. I always try to stay in a B & B and there are quite a few in the Trastevere area. The night life there is cool and there are numerous restaurants and bars. Check out TripAdvisor.com for recommendations. Make certain that the accommodation is air conditioned since you will be going in the summer.

I stayed at Aberdeen Hotel on Via Firenze just off Via de Nazionale at Christmas on a Rick Steves tour and it was very nice. It is about a 15 minute walk from the Termini and I never felt unsafe even when out walking at night.

I also believe the area is safe from physical harm. However I would remind everyone not to leave credit cards or anything like that in your luggage in the room when you go out. My son had a card lifted while we were out a couple of weeks ago and it was being used within hours. We believe it was taken while we were out. Always check and keep track of your valuables.

The statement that the Hotels around Terminni are dives and the personel surly is pretty broad.Ive stayed in the area three times at 2 different hotels and they were well run and in nice areas. They were safe so Id like to know which hotels were dives?
