Rome taxis health insurance phones

ItTaxi.com worked very well for me. I made one mistake -- I took a taxi waiting outside the Vatican museums back to my hotel. It cost me €10 more than the ride to the Vatican that morning using ItTaxi. Beware!

Second, health insurance. My Medicare Advantage plan provides excellent international coverage. No need to buy travel health insurance. Check your plan before you waste money!

Third, phones. I have Mint, which uses the Internet, when available, for calls. So far I haven't had to use my international option at all. Also, WhatsApp seems to be preferred for reservations, and it uses the Internet, which I've found available everywhere. Much easier than buying a SIM card and having a different phone number than you gave for all your reservations!

Fourth, consider using a free VPN and get a US ISP. I found some US sites were blocked with an Italian ISP.

Yes, you can be at the mercy of a driver when picking a random cab. But honestly, part of that difference may just be increased traffic or a different route needed to return, than what you took to get there. Unfortunately, most of the apps in Italy either do not give a firm price up front, or pad the price. FreeNow is another popular app, Uber is limited to Uber Black and generally costs more, but at least you know the cost.

I have been looking at options since 65 is on the horizon. I guess my caveat would be that you never really know the quality of the coverage until you have to use it for a significant claim. Also, I am finding limits on international coverage, including lifetime limits, that might restrict coverage. Then there is the issue of evacuation, which can get expensive if you are unable to travel home by yourself after an issue. The positive is, even if you had to pay out of pocket, it would be a fraction of the cost as in the US, maybe even less than most peoples deductibles.

Which provider and plan - what are the dollar limits to coverage? Is it primary or secondary coverage? How much coverage for emergency evacuation and repatriation? What is the annual out of pocket cost for the policy?

I’ve never bought travel insurance in my life and I’ve been traveling for more than 30 years.
As far as taxis go, I’ve only taken a taxi once in Europe in those 30 years, and the driver, in Sardegna,, not realizing my wife is italian, tried to rip us off and she ripped him a new one, and he relented.
Regarding cell usage abroad I haven’t bought a SIM card probably since 2002. I’ve had T-Mobile since then and used their international service + a multi gigabyte pass. For the last four years, however, I’ve only been using the global esim offered by a few companies and THAT is the only way to go whilst traveling abroad. Some eSIMs only offer data packages while others offer data and calls. Depends what you’re looking for. Airalo is what I’ve been mostly using. Good luck, and happy travels!
